Is Dj Nick Marino the Dj Clue of our generation?
The Baltimore based DJ is an artist, A&R and one of the leaders of Marino Gang records along side his brother A$AP Ant. Nick has been dropping mixtapes featuring major artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, A$AP Ant, Travis Scott and A$AP Yams to name a few. Recently we caught up with DJ Nick to ask some questions about Marino Gang and what It’s like to be a DJ in today’s social media driven age.
Thecomeupradio: When did Marino Gang Begin ?
Marino Gang started around about 2006-2007. It was a clothing line started by A$AP Ant. At first, Marino Gang was kind of like a street team promoting things. Young Diego was always with us from the start. He was pretty much suppose to be the first Marino Gang rapper. Diego and Young Shaka developed and that’s how it turned into some Marino Gang Shit.
TCUR: What influenced the name “The Big Payback” and what made you decide to name all three of your mixtapes that?
A lot of people was sleeping on me. It was like a payback for niggas who doubted me. Shout to my man Sir P. He gave me the title and was influential to all my mixtapes titles. We was on some James Brown Shit with the Big PayBack. EPMD….one of their hard ass songs is called “The Big Payback,” and that’s the kind of mood I was in at that time. It’s like the get back for people who doubted you feel me?
TCUR: So how did you switch gears to Head DJ in Charge?
I thought it was time for a new name. I didn’t wanna come out with the BigPayback 5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11. I felt like it was time for me to switch up. Sir P also gave me the name Head Dj In charge. I also feel like I’m the head DJ doing this shit too. Shoutout to everybody doing there thing, but I’m the Head Dj doing this shit. I had to put that name out there.
TCUR: Who did you enjoy working with?
I enjoyed working with Lil Uzi vert. He was a cool dude to work with. He wasn’t on no other shit. He was down to work, He came down and shot the video the same week we put out the song. I enjoy working with all my artist though.
TCUR: Out of all three mixtape what was your favorite?
I’m gonna say BigPayback Vol. 2 but I like all my shits, all my shits fire. The Big Payback 2 was crazy.
TCUR: Name some of your early influences from a music and fashion standpoint?
My biggest influence when I was going up, around the 3rd grade, was Puff Daddy. He was my favorite entertainer. I wanted to be him. Then it moved onto Mase, DMX, Cameron, Jay-Z. When it came to fashion, Dipset and Fabolous was holding shit down. I liked that era when everybody was running things with their people and the groups were all coordinated.
TCUR: You are known to be fairly close to A$AP Mob and Yams, would you mind telling us one cool story about Yams or working with him?
I’ve knew Yams for a minute before ASAP Mob blew up. We had been talking on this thing called onsmash.com. I was 16 or 17 years old at the time. When the music thing came around I never wanted to hop on his back about that cause I wasn’t here to be on no wave. Before the BigPayback dropped he wanted to be apart of it but it was a lot of Politics involved.
TCUR: Tell us about the creative process of your new project.
I wanted to drop a quick EP for the people. Creating this tape was a cool process. I think I really liked doing an EP better because I really had some exclusive tracks. Shout to my man AR and Marino Gang Productions. This time I wanted to come up with one sound. With the mixtape there isn’t really one sound.
TCUR: How do you go about selecting artists on your tape?
For starters, it’s important to keep a good relationship with artists. You never want to just hit the artist up when you need something.
TCUR: We recently did an article of the top DJ Nick tracks of all time. what would your top tracks be?
Chynna- free crack off the bigpayback
Lil Uzi VerT & A$AP ANT- 187 off the Big Payback(Greatest Hits)
